Frequently Asked Questions
Q.) Why do I get water in the basement (or Crawl space)?
A.) There can be many factors that contribute to the cause of the problem. Some of the causes are bad grading, pour gutter drainage, high water tables, cracks in walls, hydro-static pressure, porous block seepage, sealant failure, settlement, cracks in floor and more. Keep in mind that in many cases what contributed to the problem isn’t the solution. There are different types of foundation walls (listed below) and they require different technique(s) to solve the problem.

The type of foundation walls and typical reason(s) how water makes it from exterior into interior.
Block
- Sealant failed and/or cracks in wall allowing water to penetrate the hollow block and start to fill core. Over time you will notice the different stages ranging from damp spots, staining, minor seepage, to small puddles, pinholes, standing water, and flooding.
- Water seeping through crack in floor due to Hydro-static pressure (water pressure on floor) Poured Concrete
- Sealant failed and crack(s) in wall allowing water to penetrate.
- Water seeping through crack in floor due to Hydro-static pressure (water pressure on floor)
Brick
- Mortar in wall deteriorating allowing water to seep through. Can lead to structural problems.
- Water seeping through crack in floor due to Hydro-static pressure (water pressure on floor)
Stone
- Mortar in wall deteriorating allowing water to seep through. Can lead to structural problems.
- Water seeping through crack in floor due to Hydro-static pressure (water pressure on floor)
Terra Cotta
- Mortar in wall deteriorating allowing water to seep through. Can lead to structural problems.
- Terra cotta cracks and/or crumbles allowing water to penetrate.
- Water seeping through crack in floor due to Hydro-static pressure (water pressure on floor)
Q.) Will re-grading solve the problem?
A.) No. It will help and even slow down the problem but doesn’t get to the core of the problem. To get to the core of the problem you need to deal with the water at it lowest point and drain it away.
Q.) Can a leaky basement or crawl space cause a Mold problem?
A.) Yes, and in many cases it is the main cause of the Mold problem. When dealing with a mold problem it is a good idea to deal with one company qualified to do the Mold Remediation as well as the Waterproofing. Note that other recommendations should be made to control the humidity in your basement or crawl space.
Q.) Can I fix the problem myself?
A.) This type of work should to left to the professionals. Like the saying goes, “don’t try this at home” unless you are experienced in this field. You can do more damage then good and can get hurt.
